Cedar Point and Norseland Camps Fees Increase

At the April meetings of the Council Boy Scout Camping Committee and Council Finance Committee meeting, we reviewed the current rates, income and expenses at each camp, and made a recommendation to the Council Executive Committee for approval at last night’s meeting.

Although it is never an easy decision to raise rates, these increases are necessary to be a financially sustainable as a council.  Both the camps and the council have been losing money for several years.  We have undertook several initiatives this past year to both increase income and decrease expenses.  Just a few of these initiatives include:

Income:

  • Introducing a Sporting Clay Special Event to help raise money for Scouting. (July 22)
  • Introduced Trash Bag Sales to help not only the council raise money for camps, but also help youth raise money for camps.
  • Increased focus and support for the council popcorn sale.
  • Evaluation of the price of every item in the Scout Shop.
  • Revitalization of the Mankato Values Event

Expense:

  • Outsourced our book keeping services and registration services to outside vendors and eliminated a support staff position.
  • Eliminated part-time North Star district position and redistricted from 4 districts to 3.
  • Eliminated toll free number and fax number to the service center.
  • Complete review of all insurance coverages and deductibles.
  • Change in IT and computer backup support.
  • Changing from bags to post notes for Scouting for Food.
  • Reviewed vendors for patches and t-shirts.

We have also added several programs this year in order to attract and retain youth.  Some of these include:

  • Stand up paddle boards at Cuyuna.
  • New Merit Badges being offered at Cuyuna including Archeology, Home Repair, and Reptile Study.
  • Nitro Cycle at Cuyuna.
  • Cub Scout Resident Camp at both Norseland and Cedar Point.
  • Lion Cubs for Kindergarten aged youth.
  • In progress of building the “Cuyuna Arcade” that will feature a GaGa Ball pit.

Although still work in progress, the Boy Scout camping committee and Executive Board also adopted a “Strategic Improvement Plan” for all 3 of our camps.  This is part of our NCAP (National Camp Accreditation Program) standards and I have attached for your review if you are interested.

I wanted to get the rates out ASAP so that your unit can plan and budget accordingly.  I appreciate all you do for Scouting and look forward to seeing each of you at camp this summer.
