The Mankato Values event honors volunteers from Scouting and the Community that live everyday by the Scout Oath and Law. The Values Event helps raise money to support the programs and services of the Twin Valley Council, Boy Scouts of America. In 2017, we will honor 3 outstanding volunteers for their service and dedication to improving life in Mankato through their vocational and voluntary endeavors please join me in congratulating Pam DeMarce, WOW!Zone; Mike Kunkel, Kunkel Electric and Tom Hallett, Retired Kato Engineering & US Army.
Here is a little more about each of our honorees:Pam DeMarce
grew up in Minnesota Lake graduating High School in 1972. She then attend MSU where she majored in Elementary Education and minored in Early Childhood.
While attending college Pam worked at Taylor Corporation, what was then Carlson Craft; upon graduation from MSU in 1976, she stayed with the company for the next 35 years.
In 2007 she and three partners built the WOW! ZONE. Opening the day after Thanksgiving in 2008, they have now been in business nine years and look forward to continuing to provide a place where people come to eat and play together. In 2013, she was awarded the Minnesota Proprietor of the Year Award from the Bowling Proprietors of Minnesota.
Service is second nature to Pam who is a member of the Lions Club, Civitan Club, Rotary International, Optimist International, Women Entrepreneurs in Business, and Mankato Business and Professional Women’s Club. She serves on the board for Lasting Imprint, Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention, and First Congregational UCC Board of Trustees.
Pam is a past board member of the Twin Valley Council, where she has been involved in Popcorn Sales and is a past recipient of the District Award of Merit from the Twin Valley Council.
Mike Kunkel and his wife Denise have been married since 1971 and have five children; Jeff, Jeanette, Jodi, Jill, and Jamie and fifteen grandchildren.
Mike has owned Kunkel Electric since purchasing from his father in 1990 before selling to his son, Jeff, in 2016. Mike is now starting a new company, AlumaTear, that makes teardrop camping trailers.
Mike has served on the Twin Valley Council Board for over 10 years, most of which he was the Vice President of Properties. During his tenure, many projects were completed at camp including new shower/bathroom in family camp, new nature center, new picnic shelter, and building of climbing tower and ropes course. One of Mike’s most meaningful contributions to camp was building a playground at family camp in memory of his mother. Mike also served as Scoutmaster of Troop 48 in Mapleton in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s.
Mike also served on the Board for the Minnesota Electric Association and was on the education committee. During his tenure they developed a top-tier on-line apprenticeship program that is used nationwide today. Mike and Denise have both served on the Mapleton Town and Country Days board for 15 years.
Tom Hallett grew up in southern Indiana and graduated in 1966 from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio where he met his wife of 50 years, Nancy. They have three sons, two of whom are Eagle Scouts, and four granddaughters. He had a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968 and was awarded the Bronze Star. Tom was in the Army Reserves for 20 years and retired with the rank of full colonel. He also earned a master’s of science degree from Purdue University.
For 40 years Tom has been an active member of the American Legion and has served in many positions including Commander, Boy Scout Chairman of the MN State Dept. of the American Legion, Post Gambling Chair and member and organizer of the Mankato Area Veterans Memorial Squad’s Honor Guard and Firing Squad for military funerals and special events.
Tom has been very involved with Boy Scouts for 38 years in many capacities. He was a Cub Master, Asst. Scout Master and Scout Master and is currently a Vigil member of the OA, the Clan Advisor of OA Adults for Troop 4, a member of the Annual Popcorn Campaign, District Eagle Scout Advancement Chairman and a member of the Eagle Scout Board of Review. He has received numerous awards including Silver Beaver, Wood Badge, Scouter Key, District Award of Merit, Presidential Scouter Award and National American Legion Square Knot.
He is a 40-year member of St. Joseph the Worker parish and is a lector, Eucharistic minister, Sacristan, on the Buildings and Grounds Committee and a member of the Men’s Club and was the president two times.
For the past 12 years Tom has participated in the Mankato History Fest (“Tomahawk Tom”), and for 24 years he has given presentations to Mankato students on Veterans Day. As a member of the Vietnam Veterans of Southern Minnesota, he has given speeches to local high schools and colleges regarding the Vietnam War.
The Boy Scout Values Reception/Dinner will be held on Thursday, March 30, 2017. This event will be held at the Country Inn & Suites in Mankato beginning with a reception at 6:30 p.m. Dinner will follow at 7 p.m.
Cost to attend is $40 per person. You also have the option of purchasing a half table (4 seats) for $150 or a full table (8 seats) for $300. All guests will be asked to make a free will donation to Scouting as part of the program.
Keynote Speaker: Mr. Jon Pederson
Jon Pederson is President/Owner of Ruffridge-Johnson Equipment Company in Minneapolis. Following service in the U.S. Marine Corps, he graduated from Concordia College in Moorhead. He serves on the Concordia Language Villages National Advisory Board and on both local & national boards of the Boy Scouts of America including the National High Adventure Committee, Region World Jamboree Chairman, and as Area 1’s VP for Outdoor Programs. Recently he was named Scoutmaster of Philanthropy in Northern Star Council. In addition he is Commander of American Legion Post 420 and Board Chair of Norway House. He and his wife reside in Spicer and have three grown children.
